What each parameter actually does
A UTM tag is just extra text on the end of a link. It does not change the page a visitor sees. It tells your analytics where that visitor came from.
- Source
- The website or service that sent the visitor. If someone clicks a link in your email newsletter, the source is your newsletter.
- Medium
- The category of the traffic. Email, paid search, and social posts are three different mediums, even if they all point at the same page.
- Campaign
- The name of the specific push this link is part of, so you can group every link from one promotion together in your reports.
- Term
- The search keyword you bought. Only useful for paid search ads. Most people leave this blank.
- Content
- A label to tell near-identical links apart. If you put the same link in a header button and a footer link, this is how you learn which one people actually clicked.
